Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni said his team was ready to take on bitter rivals Pakistan after surviving a high-pressure game against Australia in the World Cup quarter-finals.Chasing a target of 261, Dhoni's men appeared to be in trouble at 187-5 in the 38th over but Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina carried the team to a five-wicket win with 14 balls to spare at the packed Sardar Patel Stadium.
"We needed 70-odd runs and our last batting pair was at the crease," said Dhoni. "It basically meant if we played 50 overs with Yuvraj and Raina, we would make it."There was pressure but more than the technical or skill part, it was about managing the pressure." With India running into Pakistan in the last-four, Dhoni said the pressure will only go up by several notches on his team.
India v Pakistan in semi-finals it doesn't get better. A World Cup hosted by the sub-continental nations and India and Pakistan making it to the semis. There will be more pressure on the Indian side and it will be from outside. People will say 'win the semis, we don't care about the final'. "But the reality is every game is the same for us irrespective of whether it is Australia or Pakistan. It is a big part and parcel of the game in India. It is a tough job but Indian cricketers have been managing this quite well."
Dhoni said the team opted to go for Raina ahead of the dropped Yusuf Pathan because he was technically more sound. "Yusuf at number seven was going for runs, but Raina is technically more sound and we were keen on batting 50 overs. That's why we went with Raina, but we know Yusuf can be really dangerous." Australian skipper Ricky Ponting, who made 104, credited Yuvraj and Raina for the win.
"We needed more wickets in the middle of the innings," he said. "With 15 overs to go, it was touch and go, but Yuvraj and Raina played really well. It's disappointing to bow out, we are a better team than we have played." Yuvraj, named man of the match for the fourth time in the tournament, said he concentrated on playing the balls on merit rather than go for flashy shots. When Dhoni got out, I knew we still had Raina to come, and thought if we can add 40 odd runs it would be good," said the burly left-hander.
I was hitting the ball down the ground. I was batting on instinct. I knew that I have to stay till the end and win the match for the country. I have gone through a tough year, but coming into the World Cup, getting that 50 against England, it was good. "As for today's game, 260 was a good score, Ponting batted outstandingly but we chased well."

Kevin O'Brien smashed the fastest ever Cricket World Cup century to propel Ireland to a stunning three-wicket win over England in a Group B match on Wednesday at Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
An astonishing knock by O'Brien, who clobbered 13 fours and six sixes to reach three figures in only 50 balls, helped the Irish to live up to their reputation as giant-killers as they overhauled England's total of 327-8 with five balls to spare. It was the highest successful run chase in the tournament's history.
Four years after beating Pakistan in the group stage in the Caribbean, the Irish repeated the feat to dent England's hopes of progressing into the knockout stages of the 2011 tournament.
O'Brien was eventually run out for 113 but his team mates made sure his effort had not been in vain.

West Indies paceman Kemar Roach picked up ICC Cricket World Cup's fifth hat-trick to lead his side to a massive 215 run win over Netherlands in a Group B match at Ferozeshah Kotla ground in Delhi.
West Indies posted 330 for 8 off its 50 overs and then Roach's spell of 6-27 ensured that Netherlands was bowled out for 115 in 31.3 overs.
Earlier, Devon Smith (53: 51b, 9x4) and Chris Gayle (80: 110b, 7x4, 2x6) added 100 for the opening wicket. Later Ramnaresh Sarwan (49) helped swell the score. The stage was set for Kieron Pollard (60: 27b, 5x4, 4x6) who blasted the fastest half-century of the tournament to propel West Indies to an imposing target.
For Netherlands Pieter Seelaar was the best bowler with figures of 3-45. In its chase, except Tom Cooper (55: 72b, 9x4) none of the other batsmen offered any resistance. Cooper's stand of 57 for the seventh wicket with Mudassar Bukhari (24) was the only saving grace for the Netherlands.
For West Indies Sulieman Benn picked up 3-28 to knock over the top-order. Later Roach came back to mop up the tail, dismissing Seelaar, Bernard Loots and Westdijk off successive deliveries to pick up the fifth hat-trick in World Cup history.

India and England tied one of the greatest matches in ICC Cricket World Cup history as both sides recorded 338 on Sunday. The match, which saw the highest match aggregate in the tournament's history, saw England score 13 runs off the final over to finish on 338-8 to tie the game.
Earlier Sachin Tendulkar's 98th international century saw him make a masterful 120 as India hit England's bowlers to every corner off the packed ground in Bengaluru as it smashed 338 all out. Tendulkar received excellent support from Yuvraj Singh who hit 58 and Gautam Gambhir who made 51.
Jimmy Anderson conceded the most runs in World Cup history by an English bowler as he took 1-91, but England was left to thank Tim Bresnan for his best ever ODI performance. The Yorkshire paceman took his first five-wicket haul, capturing three wickets in four balls during the 49th over, as he achieved figures of 5-48.
In reply, Andrew Strauss and Kevin Pietersen gave England a lively start, but Pietersen was very unlucky to fall to a caught and bowled chance by Munaf Patel for 31. Strauss and Trott then steadied things for England before Chawla trapped Trott in front for 16 to leave England 111-2. Strauss and Bell then combined for a record-breaking third wicket partnership with the England skipper registering 158, becoming the sixth English player to pass 4,000 ODI runs in the process. Strauss (158) brought up his hundred off just 99 balls and combined with Bell, who made 69, to add 170 for the third wicket, but they fell off consecutive deliveries to Zaheer Khan in the 43rd over to completely change the game.
Collingwood and Prior followed soon after, before Yardy and Bresnan both made useful contributions before getting out. Swann and Shahzad then combined to hit 13 runs off the last over, Shahzad dramatically hitting his first ball for six, but Swann could only manage one off the final ball to tie the match.

Pakistan beats New Zealand by two wickets in the fourth ODI at McLean Park, Napier Tuesday with an outstanding performance by Misbah-ul-Haq's 93 not out from 91 balls, his highest score in One-Day Internationals. Pakistan has claimed a 2-1 series lead over New Zealand. Pakistan former skipper Zaheer Abbas told that the way Misbah- ul-Haq is playing, he should be appointed as captain for Cricket World Cup 2011.
"Everyone can see his performance with the bat which is very remarkable and adds to the team's confidence." "PCB has yet to announce captain for the World Cup and the way Misbah is performing, I believe there are chances that PCB could choose him as ODI skipper," he said.
He expressed that Pakistan cricket team played excellently under the captaincy of Misbah in the last three test matches where two test matches ended in a draw against South Africa in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and they won the first test match against New Zealand by 10 wickets.
He said that a player should have the temperament to stay on the crease and not go for hitting every ball. "Misbah has impressed everyone with his captaincy during the test and ODI matches and has made important contributions with the bat," he concluded. Zaheer said: "in this World Cup, our team should go in with all preparations in all three formats of the game batting, bowling and fielding." Pakistan has still two more ODI's to play against New Zealand.

There are serious concerns over Sri Lanka’s venues for the 2011 Cricket World Cup and if they will be ready in time, after journalists were given a tour of the construction at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo yesterday, ahead of the second Test between Sri Lanka and West Indies, starting today.
R. Premadasa Stadium right now is well behind schedule and is not going to meet the ICC’s deadline of 30th November, by which period all construction should be complete.
Incidentally, not too long ago, Sri Lanka’s World Cup Director, Suraj Dandeniya, claimed that Sri Lanka’s venues were "ten days ahead of schedule," but nothing could be further from the truth as the ICC guidelines demand the following: "…deadline date for the completion of all stadia construction work to be 30th of November 2010 and all playing facilities to be match-ready by 31st of December 2010."
A media release sent out by Sri Lanka Cricket said construction of the venue will only be complete by 31st of December and appears to admit that Sri Lanka Cricket has broken ICC guidelines.
Although the reconstructed R. Premadasa Stadium has several new stands, not a single one of them has been complete as of now and none of them are going to be ready before the November 30 deadline and Sri Lanka could be rebuked strongly by the ICC for these serious delays.
In a state of panic, Sri Lanka Cricket was quick to issue a media release yesterday, but at the same time was concerned that photographers were taking pictures of the half finished stadium.
Labourers were putting finishing touches to the dressing rooms yesterday while other important locations such as the Match Referee's Room, Commentator's Boxes and the Press Box were incomplete and some of these facilities were temporarily shifted elsewhere.
Furthermore, Sri Lanka Cricket may as well close down the venue for public access as there is not a single stand where spectators can witness the game from and the safety of everyone entering the venue remains a huge concern.
Yesterday, players and team officials were seen struggling to get to practice nets through muddy narrow roads and with the venue in such a state, the teams would have found it extremely difficult to concentrate on cricket.
R. Premadasa will host the most number of games as a World Cup venue. Seven matches will be played there including a quarter-final and a semi-final encounter and with the World Cup just 87 days away, the organisers seem to be running out of time to complete construction.
Nishantha Ranatunga, the controversial Secretary of the Interim Committee, on a few occasions has spoken of corporate governance at Sri Lanka Cricket. Corporate Governance for him seems to be appointing the Chairman’s nephew as the Director of the World Cup Secretariat. Today, the highest paid individual at Sri Lanka Cricket is Suraj Dandeniya - - the nephew of the Chairman of the Interim Committee -- who is the Head of the World Cup Secretariat in Sri Lanka.
There’s another nephew of the Chairman working at the World Cup Secretariat for another large salary and various other individuals were recruited on the recommendations of the Ministers, Secretaries of Ministers and so on.
The only person with any qualification working at the World Cup Secretariat is Sriyan Samararatne, a respected former Air Force official.
The delay in construction is the latest setback in an administration that is struggling to lift itself.
Duleep Mendis, the affable former Captain was told to vacate his position a few months back and wasn’t even given a farewell after the stalwart served the game for over three decades in various capacities at Sri Lanka Cricket, with resounding success as well.
A request by national Captain, Kumar Sangakkara, to reinstate Chandika Hauturusinghe as a coach of the National Team too has not been considered favourably.
More shockingly, it has been revealed that the board officials have asked the country’s Under-19 cricketers to throw away their wickets during an ODI game in England after the board had made a mess of travel arrangements. With these actions, cricket officials in Sri Lanka gave a first-hand experience to young cricketers on how to throw a cricket match. As a result, Sri Lanka missed out on a golden opportunity to record a series win in England.
Despite hiccups such as these, officials like D. S. de Silva and Nishantha Ranatunga have carried on in their capacities as their political clout seem to be standing in good stead. But little do the politicians who back them realise that officials such as de Silva and Ranatunga are doing irreparable damage to the sport.

Pakistan has provisionally agreed not to select five players for next year's World Cup in the subcontinent as they seek to come clean on match-fixing charges against some stars.
Former Test captain Salman Butt, fast bowlers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer, wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal and leg-spinner Danish Kaneria - who was involved in an alleged spot-fixing scandal on the English county scene - have been blacklisted in response to last month's ultimatum by the ICC, which gave the Pakistan board 30 days to take a action against corruption.
According to the Daily Star, Akmal has been under investigation for his role in Pakistan's controversial defeat by Australia in January's Sydney Test.
On the other hand, Kaneria was recently cleared by police over allegations of spot-fixing, but has not been offered a new contract by Essex. The other three are also accused of spot-fixing during the England series.

Former Test cricketer Syed Kirmani unveiled the 2011 ODI World Cup Trophy here on Wednesday and hoped Team India will end the 28-year-old wait and win it next year.
Kirmani, a member of the 1983 World Cup winning Indian squad, recalled the triumph of the Kapil Dev-led side and said the country's win taught the cricketing fraternity that any team could humble the world champions on its day.
Wishing good luck to the Indian team for the event beginning in February, he said, "The performance this year is a good omen. We had been waiting for 28 years to win the World Cup. Hopefully, this will happen in 2011 and Sachin Tendulkar's dream to win the World Cup in his career is fulfilled."
The ex-stumper praised Team India for its emphatic win over Australia in Bangalore, and said the Test showed the five-day game still had the capacity to attract spectators.
"It was an excellent performance. Everyone, in fact, you people (media) had said Test cricket should not be played.
It will dim. Now see what sort of results are coming out. Two days ago, everyone felt it (Bangalore Test) was going to be a draw. But now you see what has happened."
Terming the win as "historic", Kirmani said it was good to see youngsters contributing in the team's victory.
Singling out Tendulkar for praise, he described the batting maestro as a "legendary cricketer". "Whenever he bats, he makes history or crosses some milestones. Hopefully, he will make some unbreakable records."

In latest cricket news, ICC and the organizing bodies of Indian Sub-Continent are ready to cope with the expected terrorism in the upcoming World Cup 2011 but still the terror threat over looms the most awaited cricket event.
The fearless attack on the Sri-Lankan team in 2009 has proven the weak security arrangements by the Pakistani Law enforcement agencies. This unfortunate event shifted the hosting of World Cup to the rest of the three countries as Pakistan had been fallen out of the venue. Players from Sri Lankan team were injured in this unfortunate event.
Moreover, it has been planned out to move the championship to Australia/New Zealand, if in any case some uneven incident of terrorism occurs during this mega event of cricket. The same has been confirmed by the cricket board of the New Zealand (focused in the latest cricket news and all sporting news).
Definitely it would be an unfortunate event for South Asians as this mega event is retuning back here after 15 years. India, Sri-Lanka and
Pakistan had co-hosted the 1996 World Cup. Similarly in the 1996, Australian team refused to visit Sri Lanka due to possible terror threat and insurgency in the country.
The Indian cricket which generates 75% of the international revenue of the cricket, may suffer by terrorism.
Now all sporting news are focused on the security agencies of South Asia, as all three nations are assuring security to all cricket teams are a huge number of fanship around the globe. On the same time the cricket board of the said nations are propagating for the event and assuring the maximum protection of the teams and their followers.
Similarly, in India Pakistani players were not selected in IPL as the owner received a lot of threats from the Indian militant organization and a right wing political party, Shiv Sena. In the same fashion the Aussies were also withdrawn from the IPL due to same reason.
The security risk is increasing day by day as the event is approaching South Asia. Organizers and security agencies are trying to make it smooth but there are certain chances of possible terror attacks on the much awaited Cricket World Cup.
Speculations have been made out that it would be very difficult to control such situation if some awful incident occurs during this World Cup. Transferring the event to any other destination would not white wash the red blots of blood out of this magnificent event.
No doubt Cricket is not the only game on planet which has been victimized by terrorism. In the month of January, a gunman opened fire on the Togo national football squad at the venue of Africa Cup of Nations where three persons were killed and many were injured.
Cricket is the cheapest, most accessible and enjoyable way of entertainment here in South Asia and terrorist organizations always hit such events and venues where a huge number of people can be targeted easily.

With just six months to go before the start of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, the ICC has announced the schedule of warm-up matches for the flagship event which will be staged in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
The warm-up fixtures will be played across the three host countries with Bangalore, Chennai, Chittagong, Colombo, Dhaka, Nagpur and Pallekele as venues.
Each of the 14 competing sides will play two warm-up matches with four-time and reigning world champion Australia taking on India and South Africa on 13 and 15 February in Bengaluru. Sri Lanka, one of the co-hosts, will go head to head with the Netherlands and the West Indies on 12 and 16 February in Pallekele and Colombo respectively. The 1992 world champion Pakistan meets Bangladesh and England in Dhaka on 15 and 18 February.
India's second match, after the one against Australia, will be against New Zealand in Chennai on 16 February.
The ICC president Sharad Pawar was confident that the 2011 edition of the tournament will be more successful than its nine predecessors. "Today means that the start of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 is exactly six months away. Let there be no doubt whatsoever that the ICC, along with the three co-hosts, will ensure that the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 is the best of all the World Cups staged so far," Pawar said.
Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal can't wait for 19 February when his side will take on 1983 world champion India in the tournament opener.
"This will be my second ICC Cricket World Cup but definitely the one I am longing for. In front of our own fans, families and friends we have the opportunity to make the country proud and deep inside every Bangladesh cricketer has a burning desire to excel," said the left-handed batsman.
Sri Lanka's legendary off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan, who is available for the World Cup despite retiring from Tests, rated Sri Lanka's 1996 World Cup triumph on par with his 800-wicket feat in Test cricket. "Obviously winning the tournament in the Indian subcontinent in 1996 is something I rate as highly as my 800 Test wickets and reaching the final in the West Indies three years ago was also by no means a small achievement.
"I'm hoping victory in next year's World Cup will not only strengthen our future as a cricketing nation but will also help us produce more world-class cricketers who will go on to entertain the world with their flare, talent, charisma and prowess," Muralitharan said.
The following is the schedule of warm-up matches:
February 12:
West Indies vs Kenya at Colombo
Sri Lanka vs Netherlands at Pallekele
Zimbabwe vs South Africa at Chennai
Bangladesh vs Canada at Chittagong
February 13:

When the ICC revealed the elephant "Stumpy" as the mascot for the 2011 Cricket World Cup, the public reacted with what can only be described as "the opposite of unbridled excitement". However, the ICC has been quick to defend its choice, insisting that Stumpy is the ideal mascot for the occasion.
Speaking to the press, CWC director Ratnakar Shetty said, "The elephant has been chosen since it is an iconic animal that truly represents cricket in the subcontinent. It's a lumbering, inflexible and inconveniently powerful beast, just like the BCCI. It doesn't bite and shows absolutely no signs of bouncing, just like the SSC wicket. It does not even remotely resemble the Bengal Tiger, just like the Bangladesh cricket team. It's a perfect symbol for a tournament hosted by these three great cricketing nations."
Shetty also defended the widely panned choice of name. "The name Stumpy was chosen after lengthy deliberations by a panel of creative experts, including professionals from the advertising and marketing fields, and, for some reason, Ravi Shastri, who seems to be on every single panel and committee constituted by the BCCI. We carefully considered and rejected many outstanding alternatives - including "Pitchy" (mildly obscene), "Batty" (insanity connotation), "Bally" (hoo), "Paddy" (too Irish) and "Abdomen Guardy" (rhymes with Michael Yardy)."
"Stumpy is just perfect. Other than the fact that it conjures up some vaguely disturbing imagery of ICC officials without hands or feet, there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. Besides, with all the other options ruled out, it was the only cheesy, obvious cricket reference left," concluded Shetty.
The appointment of Anil Kumble by the BCCI as an "off-field behaviour" coach for the Indian team has been closely followed by another, even more ridiculous, initiative by the Indian board - they're looking for a coach to train millions of cricket fans around the world in proper in-stadium behaviour. Apparently the BCCI believes that teaching huge numbers of fans not to irk their players is far easier than teaching players like Yuvraj Singh not to act like immature, overgrown schoolboys and take offence at random jibes from the stands.
"It's clear that spectators all over the world are in dire need of instruction on how to behave towards the Indian team. Can't have ill-mannered fans calling our dear players all sorts of nasty things like 'water boy', 'tax collector' and 'history professor'. Further, these louts in the stands keep making rude and boorish comments about our inept fast bowling, pathetic fitness levels and tendency to collapse so that Virender Sehwag's percentage contribution to the team total remains in the high fifties. Not done. They need to be taught a lesson," thundered Ravi Shastri, chairman of the BCCI's newly constituted fan management committee.
Denying that the authorities had overreacted in arresting the fans who called Yuvraj Singh a "water boy", Shastri retorted: "Nobody, with the possible exception of lookalike Michael Bevan, likes being associated with Adam Sandler. How do you think Kumar Sangakkara would react if I suddenly walked up to him and called him 'Happy Gilmore'? In fact, they're lucky that they only called Yuvi a water boy. If they'd called him 'The Last Airbender' or 'Raavan', it would have meant the death penalty."
Commenting on who will perform the role of "in-stadium" behaviour coach, Shastri said, "It's got to be a really nice guy, well respected, and with a lot of time on his hands. Perhaps the prime minister, Dr Manmohan Singh?"
