Friday, June 4, 2010
Brad Pitt just joined the star studded team of US who will vie to bring the World Cup back to the country in 2018 or 2022. Other members of the team that will bid for USA are former President Bill Clinton, California Governor / actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, director Spike Lee, comedian Drew Carey and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
The group revealed on Wednesday that Brad Pitt accepted to join the USA Bid Committee. Pitt in his statement said that it’s an honour to join the committee and that “soccer is a truly global sport”. He also added that FIFA has used the sport to help and bring in positive social changes around the world. He is proud to be part of such a team that will follow the principles set by FIFA.
USA last hosted the event in 1994. This time for the year 2018, USA will go up against Australia, England, Russia and two joint bidders, Belgium – Netherlands and Spain – Portugal. For 2022, it will bid with Qatar, Japan, and South Korea. It is most likely that the bid will go to a European country / countries for 2018, since eight of the 24 votes will come from that region.
On Dec 2, FIFA will select the host countries for the Soccer World Cup for the years, 2018 and 2022. [Via]
