The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the appointment of five incumbent leaders of the game as ICC ambassadors for the 2010/2011 season, which includes the prestigious quadrennial event of ICC – the ICC World Cup 2011 scheduled to be hosted by three sub continent nations jointly.

The five ambassadors announced by the ICC include the current captain of Sri Lanka Kumar Sangakkara, the vice captain of Indian cricket team Virender Sehwag, Ricky Ponting’s deputy for ODIs and the T20 captain of Australia Michael Clarke, the winning captain of ICC World T20 2010 Paul Collingwood of England, Simon Taufel from the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires. All the above five cricketing personalities have duly agreed to represent the International Cricket Council in the capacity of ICC Ambassadors for the next 12 months.

These extremely respected personals of ICC will be called upon to support and sponsor a number of events and initiatives of the governing body of cricket. The events and initiatives include next year’s ICC Cricket World Cup, Spirit of Cricket, THINKWISE, and the Pepsi ICC Development Programme (a joint venture of International Cricket Council and Pepsi Cola International).
Besides making appearances at social events, press conferences and coaching clinics, all the five ICC Ambassadors will also offer valuable shore up and general understanding of the activities of the International Cricket Council, and its key stakeholders.

This elite group of professionals is already known for its distinguished performances both on and off the cricket field, but now the prestige associated with being the ambassadors of the supreme governing body of international cricket promises an exciting 2011 season waiting ahead for all of them.

Both Sri Lankan skipper Kumar Sangakkara and the ICC umpire Simon Taufel have been appointed as ICC brand ambassadors for the third successive time since the agenda was initiated in 2008 while rest of the three - Michael Clarke, Virender Sehwag and Paul Collingwood, have been appointed for the very first time.

The ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat said that all the five individuals who have been named as the brand ambassadors for ICC have a lot to offer and will help a lot in promoting the game in the world.

"To have such fantastic personalities who are hugely respected figures within the game give their support to the work we do is reassuring.” Haroon Lorgat, the ICC chief executive, said. "Virender, Michael, Kumar, Paul and Simon have so much to offer and to have access to their valuable time and energy for issues of importance to the ICC is beneficial to the game as a whole.”

Last year two women cricketers, Lisa Sthalekar and Charlotte Edwards, were also named as the brand ambassadors of ICC. The previous panel included former skipper and veteran batsman of India Rahul Dravid, the promising all-rounder of South Africa Jean-Paul Duminy, skipper of England women’s cricket team Charlotte Edwards and the Australian player and New South Wales’ skipper Lisa Sthalekar.

All the above names of the previous ambassador’s panel participated in the social events, coaching clinics and the press conferences organized by the International Cricket Council. They played vital role in providing general awareness to the people regarding activities of the ICC.
